Mayor introduces legislation to ban conversion therapy in Rochester

Mayor Lovely Warren wants to ban 'conversion therapy' in the City of Rochester.

She says it's a move to protect LGBTQ youth in our community from a discriminatory practice. Conversion therapy tries to change a person's sexual orientation if they identify as homosexual or bisexual.

It's been rejected by most health practitioners as ineffective and harmful.

"For therapists to charge individuals, or their parents, for such a dangerous and debunked therapy is predatory and it is just plain wrong," stated Mayor Warren.

The mayor introduced the legislation with City Councilmember Mitch Gruber.

It will go before the city council later this month.

New York City adopted similar legislation against this practice last year.
