ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Registration is open right now for the Jungle Jog 5K Run & Walk with the Seneca Park Zoo.

On Sunday, July 21, competitive and casual runners, walkers, and families will take in the sights of Seneca Park Zoo and the adjacent Seneca Park.

One of those runners will be Kathy Lanning from Webster. An avid runner, Lanning has participated in marathons and half-marathons, but the Jungle Jog is a favorite for her.

On Father’s Day of 2016, Lanning was riding her motorcycle when a drunk driver hit her and left the scene. Her husband was up ahead on his motorcycle and able to get her the help she needed.

She survived the crash but had severe injuries: a broken tibia, fibula, a shattered kneecap.

Some doctors told her she would never run again, but her surgeon and running friends encouraged her. For months she was in a wheelchair, but in January 2017 she set her sights on the Jungle Jog.

“I thought about running, and I believed, yeah, I could do this. First race that came to my mind was the Jungle Jog,” she said, explaining it was a favorite of hers because her family could also participate.

From wheelchair, to walker, to cane, she trained for the race, co-workers and grandkids running and walking alongside her that summer.

The 5K is raising money for giraffe conservation, and creates awareness about the need to protect them.

The registration cost also includes your ticket to the Zoo on the day of the event. Click here to learn more.
