Deputies and fire crews continue to investigate a fatal house fire in Ontario County.

A passerby reported the fire at a home on County Road 36 in the town of Naples just before 4 a.m. The home, consisting of a full first floor and partial second floor, have collapsed into the basement due to extensive damage.

Deputies say 94-year-old Marian Fleischmann owned the home and rented a room in the home to 64-year-old Michael Schenk.

At approximately 1:45 p.m. investigators located and positively identified the body of Fleischmann in the basement, where the area near her bedroom collapsed from the fire. She is currently being transported to the Monroe County Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.

Investigators also located the body of Schenk inside the home.

“I wish she passed of natural causes,” said Garry Wohlschlegel, the woman’s youngest son.

Wohlschlegal tells News10NBC that his parents built the home and his mother loved it so much she never left.

“Had no regrets and loved living by herself,” he added. “She was happy.”

The family confirms Schenk was an old friend of Fleischmann's, working on the family farm back in the 70s. He needed a place to stay and had been living with Fleischmann for only four months when the family finally served him an eviction notice.

News10NBC did ask investigators whether the fire could have been set deliberately but investigators strongly believe it was accidental.

“Sad someone else had to perish along with her but it’s just part of life,” said the son who sends his condolences to the Schenk family.

The Ontario County Sheriff's Office and New York State Homeland Security and Emergency Services are continuing to investigate the cause and origin of the fire.
