Children in ICU after being hit by car in Gates; driver charged with reckless driving

GATES, N.Y. (WHEC) — Two young children are in intensive care after a car hit them in a Gates parking lot Thursday night.

The driver who hit them, 29-year-old Letoya Palmo, is charged with reckless driving, moving from a lane unsafely, an uninspected motor vehicle, and two tickets for an unrestrained child.

Gates Police say a father was pulling his 10-month-old son and his 2-year-old daughter in a wagon when a car left the road and struck them. Crews responded to the crash in the parking lot of Ferris Insurance Company on Lyell Avenue across the street from Wegmans around 7 p.m.

Police say Palmo was distracted by her young kids in the seat and hit a utility pole before hitting the children. Investigators say the two kids were dragged under the car about 50 feet.

The children were taken to Strong Memorial Hospital. They are in the intensive care unit and are expected to survive.

"Unfortunately, as first responders, we have to keep our emotions in check and just kind of run the scene and get our job done, but it really hits home because we all have families and it’s hard seeing children in distress but we try to do what we do and save lives," said Gates Police Sgt. James Coughlin.

Palmo was released on tickets to appear in the Gates Court on July 23.

Police do not believe alcohol or drugs were a factor but the investigation is ongoing and additional charges could be filed.
