ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — For weeks many people in the Rochester area have been dealing with nightly, illegal fireworks displays that often continue late into the night.

While some aren't bothered by the sound of fireworks, some people with PTSD, pets and children are saying enough is enough.

Even Gov. Andrew Cuomo said he's never seen or heard it like this before.

He has directed the New York State p Police to start a fireworks enforcement detail.

The governor says most of the illegal fireworks come from fireworks stores in Pennsylvania, just over the border.

State Police are going to focus their attention on that route, to stop the firework from coming into New York.

While the State Police will be focusing on people bringing fireworks into the state from Pennsylvania, Gov. Cuomo said local governments need to start taking this seriously and enforcing the law.

"They're disturbing,” Gov. Cuomo said. “They bother people. And they are dangerous. And children, people, get hurt every year. It is illegal. You can't do it. It is illegal. And the Police Department needs to enforce the law."

New York State does allow "sparkling devices," described on the state’s website as ground-based or handheld devices that produce a shower of colored sparks and or a colored flame, audible crackling or whistling noise and smoke.
