ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Gov. Andrew Cuomo has selected a special election date to fill the seat left by former Congressman Chris Collins.

The special election to fill the state's vacant 27th Congressional District seat will be held on April 28 — the same day as New York's presidential primary.

Collins resigned in September, one day before he pleaded guilty to charges in his insider trading case. Since then, people in the 27th District have gone without representation in Congress.

Cuomo cannot make an official proclamation on the special election date until Feb. 9.

The 27th District covers all of Genesee, Livingston, Orleans, and Wyoming counties, as well as part of Erie, Ontario, Monroe and Niagara counties.
