Cuomo releases school reopening formula for NY

ALBANY, N.Y. (WHEC) — Gov. Andrew Cuomo has released the state formula that will dictate if a school is eligible to reopen or not.

According to the formula, schools will open as long as the region is in Phase Four and the daily infection rate remains below 5% using a 14-day average.

However, schools will close if its regional infection rate is greater than 9% using a 7-day rolling average starting after Aug. 1.

The formula determination will be made between Aug. 1 through Aug. 7.

The state is working with the State Education Department as they get ready to release an education guideline that meets the State Department of Health requirements. 

According to NYSED's presentation to the NYS Board of Regents, the official guidance will be distributed on Wednesday. The guidance includes:

  • Schools conducting health checks
  • Developing plans to maximize social distancing whenever possible
  • Requiring students and staff to wear face coverings Reviewing school cleaning and disinfecting procedures

Schools must also create a schedule that includes in-person instruction, remote instruction, and a combination of both.
