Wayne County doctor charged with child pornography

Patients tell News10NBC they're stunned after the arrest of a Wayne County physician on child pornography charges. They say they never saw this side of him.

Investigators say Dr. David Blasczak, 69, took explicit pictures of his own young patients. Federal agents arrested him Thursday morning, and raided his home in Newark.

Federal prosecutors say Blasczak bought thousands of sexually explicit images of children through a website hosted out of India they're calling "website m." They're also concerned about children they say he admits to exploiting right at home in Wayne County.

"When I heard child porn and it really jumped out at me and I seen his face and I said 'oh my God no. Not my own doctor,'" said patient Sharon Shoemaker.

Shoemaker was at Clyde Family Health Center, where Blasczak has been practicing, just yesterday to see the man she called her family's trusted longtime doctor.

"I thought he was always nice because he took care of my son when he had hernias," she said. "And he took care of me when I had seizures and everything, and now I can't say nothing good about him."

Court documents say he bought thousands of images involving children as young as two. Investigators also say he took his own explicit pictures of eight child patients in his Clyde office and paid their parents, saying it was for research.

"Physicians, the Hippocratic oath, is to do no harm," said U.S. Attorney J.P. Kennedy. "Obviously allegations like this, people with access because of their position do children are especially disturbing."

Beyond his office, prosecutors also say Blasczak confessed to touching and photographing young girls at sleepovers for his daughters, something Shoemaker says she once heard about, and rejected, as a neighborhood rumor.

"My own doctor did that? I don't believe you," Shoemaker said. "(It) makes you think."

Homeland Security and the U.S. Attorney's Office are asking for any parents or children who may know anything about these allegations over the years to contact them.

Right now, Blasczak is only charged for trafficking online in child pornography.

Federal prosecutors say they're going public with this now because they want to get the word out that they hope to hear from any more possible victims and more charges are likely forthcoming.

Blasczak is scheduled to appear in court Friday.
