Deputies say there was not nor is there a threat to the Letchworth Central School District following an investigation into a perceived threat made on social media.

A high school student was identified by other students through social media as the source of the threat, deputies say, and the student and family have been cooperating with school officials and investigators.

Deputies say the perceived threat has either been seen or reported or rumored in several ways, making it appear it is recurring over and over in different formats.

Following last week's shooting at Florida high school, additional patrols were at the Letchworth Central School District Thursday morning along with their school resource officer, who is also a deputy sheriff.

Superintendent Todd Campbell issued the following statement regarding the threat:

"Your child's safety is our highest priority. I am reaching out to make you aware of some information. There is an ongoing investigation of some possible threats of violence on social media. We have been fully cooperating with the Wyoming County Sheriff's Office and other law enforcement agencies. At this point, we are taking necessary precautions to be sure our campus is safe. We will continue to have an increased police presence on our campus as the investigation progresses. Again, student safety is our highest priority."

Wyoming County Sheriff Gregory Rudolph issued the following statement:

"We are thankful to the students who reported what they seen or heard whether it was firsthand knowledge or not. Although the investigation is ongoing, we were able to immediately investigate and determine there was no actual threat to the campus, staff or students. School safety is our number one priority and we are grateful to share that mission with the highly professional staff of the Letchworth Central School District. The product is an atmosphere where reporting is embraced, which is the number one defense in our current school safety environment."
