PHELPS, N.Y. (WHEC) — Deputies launched a homicide investigation after a man was found shot and killed on Route 96 in Phelps Tuesday night.
Now, the Ontario County Sheriff is asking for your help in solving this crime. Sheriff Kevin Henderson says someone may have seen something on Route 96 where the young man was found. It happened near Hayes Road.
"We are actively investigating this as a homicide," said Henderson.
Investigators say the victim was found shot in the upper body. The victim was in his late 20s or early 30s, but he did not have any ID on him, according to Henderson.
A passing driver noticed the body on the shoulder of the road around 10:30 p.m. and called 911, according to the Ontario County Sheriff's Office.
"That motorist turned around and went back and verified there was somebody laying on the shoulder of the highway. Our deputy was relatively close and responded within minutes," said Henderson.
The man, who the sheriff says was dead for possibly an hour when deputies arrived, was taken to the medical examiner for an autopsy.
"With the evidence that we have found we believe the crime occurred at the highway," he added.
Henderson says he's fairly confident this is an isolated incident, but the sheriff says there are a number of possibilities. The location is a couple of minutes from the Geneva Thruway entrance.
"If somebody happened to see a car pulled over, possibly with their lights on or somebody along the highway or even the deceased, maybe somebody saw him earlier...we're encouraging them to call us."
The Monroe County Medical Examiner's Office is conducting an autopsy to help identify the victim and to determine the cause of death.
