ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — News10NBC is investigating a complaint into one of the biggest electronic companies in America.
And it comes down to this: when HP sells you a two year warranty, shouldn't it last two years? That's the argument made to News10NBC by the man who made the complaint, a long time criminal defense lawyer in Rochester.
Attorney Jim Hinman complained to the New York State Attorney General when he says his two year warranty expired after one year. Hinman thinks this is happening to a lot of people and they don't know it.
Chief Investigative Reporter Berkeley Brean: "When I say the words HP, you think what?"
Jim Hinman, attorney: "One of the largest electronic companies in the country or the world."
In 2017, Hinman bought an HP OfficeJet Pro 8740 for his law office. It came with a one year warranty.
Here's the potential problem that can affect you or where you work.
In 2018, Hinman says HP offered a two year extension and he bought it. Earlier this year though, Hinman says HP told him the warranty is expiring.
Jim Hinman: "And I said no, it should be expiring in 2020. I paid for two years. Under their theory I'm buying maybe 13 months at that point."
Brean: "But you thought you were buying two years."
Hinman: "Of course."
At 11:56 a.m., I contacted HP on email and spelled out exactly what Hinman told me.
I asked for an explanation.
At 5:11 p.m., HP spokesman Katie Derkits wrote back.
"HP honors all active warranties and is committed to customer satisfaction," she said.
Brean: "You believe there are other people out there like you?"
Hinman: "I believe there must be. HP sells these things everywhere. There must be thousands of them in New York State at least."
According to the website Statista, HP sells the second most number of printers in the world.
Hinman says the AG's office contacted him to say it's looking into this.
At noon, I emailed AG's office and included his letter. I asked for the status of any investigation and whether the office has received other similar complaints.
At 4:52 p.m., AG spokesman Fabian Levy contacted me writing that he is looking into it.
