ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Doctors at Golisano Children’s Hospital say parents should get their children vaccinated against the flu before Halloween.

The hospital says the flu can be a very serious illness, and lead to severe complications in children, and that the vaccine is the most effective way to prevent children from getting the flu.

Golisano says it can take up to two weeks for the vaccine to become fully effective, so getting vaccinated before the end of October ensures kids are fully protected once the illness starts to circulate.

Dr. Neil Herendeen, who works at Golisano Children's Hospital, said there are more options this year.

“You have two options for the flu vaccine this year,” Herendeen said. “You can get your shot like you normally do, or the nasal spray is now available for kids two and above. That one hadn't for the last couple years, didn't know if it was gonna work that well; this year it looks like its working great and it should be as equally effective as the flu shot.”

Doctors say everyone 6 months old or older, and anyone who lives with or cares for children, especially infants, should get vaccinated.
