Police: driver of stolen car briefly escapes, crashes on Lyell Avenue

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) - A brief car chase broke out at between the driver of a stolen car and police at around 10 Friday night.

Rochester Police say the driver sped away after they tried to stop him at the Bausch Street Bridge. The driver clipped a New York State Police car and another car as he made his escape.

The police lost visual contact with the stolen car between Lyell Avenue and State Street. The driver crashed into a car at the corner of Lyell Avenue and Saratoga Avenue, fleeing by foot from the scene.

Police caught up with the driver and apprehended him. He was transported to Rochester General Hospital by ambulance and treated for non-life threatening injuries sustained from the crash.

The car was reported stolen in Rochester just before 9 Friday night.

Upon release from the hospital, police will charge the suspect with theft and traffic violations. The name of the suspect was not released because Rochester Police and the New York State Police continue to investigate.

No other injuries were reported during this incident.
