ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC)— Rochester Police say the car found in the middle of the Genesee River Monday morning was stolen, but nobody was inside the car.

Responders from the Rochester Fire and Police Departments could be seen down by the river in the area of the Bausch Street/ Smith Street bridge around 8 a.m. The car could be seen near the middle of the river.

A rescue team on a raft floated out to the car and opened the trunk, as well as tapped on the windows. Nobody appeared to have been inside the car.

And RPD spokesperson told News10NBC the car was stolen out of Greece, and the investigation is being taken over by Greece Police.

News10NBC spoke to Rebekah Diamond, who said she was riding by when she saw the car, and called 911.

"I've never seen anything like this,  I always look in the river when we cross by, not sure why, but I do," Diamond said. "Yeah, I'm glad I looked in there today and made sure nobody was in there."

The car was removed from the river around 12:445 p.m. Investigators have not said how the car ended up in the river, or how long it was there before it was spotted. News10NBC has reached out to GPD for comment.
