GREECE, N.Y. (WHEC) —The last Ruby Tuesday in the Rochester area has closed permanently.
Employees arrived at the restaurant on West Ridge Road in Greece Friday morning to find a paper posted on the door telling them the business won't be reopening.
Dennis Latinville has worked at this Ruby Tuesday location for 17 years. He showed up Friday afternoon in his uniform for his shift, only to learn he had lost his job.
"Five times this has happened to me and I just turned 59 and it's nothing new," Latinville said. "All the companies I've worked for, retail, building companies, restaurants, and they never give you a notice."
The note on the door confirmed the business had closed, but did not give a reason.
"In the back of my mind with sales the way they've been it doesn't surprise me," Latinville said. "I already prepared myself and took full-time hours at another job."
Not every employee was prepared for the shocking news. Arianna Hevron checked her schedule online Friday morning and found a notice that said her job would be closing.
"They said they realize it would be a shock to most of us and our families and asked us to come in before five to talk," Hevron said.
Arianna Hevron brought her two kids to collect a severance package that she's expecting to be close to $200. She has worked at Ruby Tuesday for six years.
"This place was like a second home to me," Hevron said. "I remember one day coming in and almost taking off my shoes because it honestly felt like home."
Ruby Tuesday is owned by NRD Capital out of Atlanta. News10NBC reached out to them about the closing and received this statement in response:
“At Ruby Tuesday, we greatly appreciate and value our neighborhood guests and employees. While it is never an easy decision to close restaurants, the closures are a necessary step as we focus on executing on our long term growth strategy and building a stronger business for the future. We appreciate the communities that have supported us, please visit rubytuesday.com for a list of our locations.”
A Restaurant Business article claims the endless salad bar chain closed more than 50 locations in 2018.
The closest Ruby Tuesday is now in Buffalo.
