ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Many of you who have downloaded New York State’s new “Excelsior Pass” have noticed there is an expiration date on it and you’re wondering how it’s going to be able to be used at sporting events and entertainment venues as promised if those expiration dates are so soon.

Lisa Carrozzi is a front-line worker who was vaccinated back in January. Last week, she decided to download the state’s Excelsior Pass.

“I was like, 'Well that way I have proof that I have a vaccination,' not that I'm planning on traveling anytime soon but it's easy, it's on my phone, I don't have to carry my card around that has other information on it I can just use that,” Carrozzi told News10NBC.

But, she’s got a problem.

“I pulled up my vaccination and pulled it into the wallet and I noticed there was an expiration date and I'm like, 'Well it says it expires the end of April,' How is that going to be helpful for me?” she wondered.

The expiration date on Carrozzi’s pass is 90 days after her last shot.

“That was an early set of recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control that included this 90 day-window after vaccination. Those recommendations have been changed entirely and at this point, there is no window... the assumption is once you've been vaccinated that you will be immune for as long as we know right now, we don't know if it'll last years, we don't know if it'll last months but we know it's greater than three months,” explained Dr. Nancy Bennett, the head of the Finger Lakes Vaccine Hub.

News10NBC contacted Governor Cuomo’s office. A spokesman says that while they used the 90-day mark to get started, Excelsior Pass users will be able to re-generate a new pass every 30 days as the science changes.
