ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC)— You probably know by now the tax deadline has been extended to May 17, so you still have plenty of time to file.
News10NBC is hearing from a lot of you who've already filed but haven't received a refund. One viewer emailed us saying, "New York State is not releasing tax refunds."
With the state's budget crisis it sounds like a real possibility, so News10NBC's Nikki Rudd did a fact check. First and foremost, New York State is releasing tax money. Rudd reached out to the NYS Department of Taxation and Finance. Officials say your refund will not be delayed unless they need additional information on what you submitted in your return.
In fact, so far, more than three million tax refunds have been issued totaling $2.3 billion.
So what can you do if you have questions about your New York tax return? First, there's a website where you can check your refund status 24/7 online.
There's also a call center. The number to call is (518) 457-5181.
"We have over 400 staff professionals operating our call center and ready to answer any questions that you might have about taxes here in New York with wait times of just one or two minutes," said NYS Tax Department Commissioner Michael Schmidt.
State tax officials tell us if you filed electronically and requested direct deposit instead of a check you should get your money within 30 days.
