ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — News10NBC did a Fact Check last month on whether New York has the highest taxes in the country. One viewer challenged our report. She said our fact check didn't tell the other side the story: all the services our taxes provide.
So News10NBC's Nikki Rudd put some of her claims to the test.
First, the viewer said we have the best roads in the country. That is not true. According to U.S. News and World Report, Nevada is the top state for infrastructure followed by Oregon, Washington, North Dakota and Utah. New York ranked 30th for transportation infrastructure.
Claim two: Our schools are superior. New York is in the top third of all states. U.S. News and World Report ranks New York 19th in the nation for pre-k thru 12. What about Higher Ed? New York does a little better coming in at 14.
Another claim from the viewer: we have excellent hospitals. That is mostly true. We are ranked in the top 10 for healthcare coming in at number seven in the country.
We should point out what we told you in our previous Fact Check report. New York doesn't have the top individual income tax rate, the top sales tax or even property taxes. However, according to the Tax Foundation, New York does have the top combined state and local tax burden.
