Family escapes Rochester house fire

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) -- A family was forced out into the cold after their home caught fire early Friday morning.

It happened at a duplex on Emerson Street in Rochester around 3:30 a.m.

The fire started in the back of one of the units. Firefighters say the people inside tried to put it out with a garden hose, but the flames were too big.

One adult and three children were able to make it out safely. Firefighters rescued the family's dogs.

The home has minor damage. A cause is still under investigation.
