ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Infectious Disease Expert Dr. Anthony Fauci laid out a timeline for youth vaccinations Wednesday, saying in part he believes researchers will have enough data to vaccinate younger children by early next year.

He thinks high schoolers could actually get it this fall. Fauci says right now, they are also doing a study in elementary school children.

"We will not have to prove in an efficacy trial that they work," Fauci said. "We just need to show that it's safe and introduces a comparable immune response that we know correlates with protection."

Locally, UR Medicine and Golisano Children's Hospital announced it will participate in Moderna's COVID vaccine study in children. That local trial will start this spring.

News10NBC asked if there is any evidence that it would be unsafe for children to use this Moderna vaccine, and doctors told us the vaccines have been shown to be safe for the population.
