Finger Lakes Health says that it’s lost access to its computer system.
The agency said that an outside party is demanding payment to let it access its files.
The agency was notified of the breach around midnight Sunday. Officials at Finger Lakes Health say right now, there's no indication patient or employee information has been compromised.
"We immediately implemented our manual downtime protocol and procedures which we have practiced for circumstances when computer access is limited," said Finger Lakes Health in a statement. "We, like many other health systems and businesses, have prepared for this inevitability due to the increase in these types of incidents."
While the system is locked out, officials say they have been using paper.
The attack has left Geneva General, all of the private practices, labs, surgery centers, specialists and nursing homes run by Finger Lakes Health impacted.
"I'm glad I was going home the next day was [at] the beginning of this whole thing," said Cynthia Smith, who was discharged just hours before the computer and phone systems went down.
"Some of the nurses were kind of upset because they said that frankly they had never worked with paper and pencil since they started their career, it had always been computerized."
Finger Lakes Health is working with law enforcement and security professionals to get the system back up as soon as possible. You may have trouble scheduling appointments while the computers are down.
Thankfully, as mentioned earlier, it does not appear any patient records of financial information is being held hostage.
"In most of these instances, there is no exfiltration of data, there's technically no breach of data. That said, any organization that is issuing a notification about an incident likely doesn't have all the information they need yet," says Reg Harnish, CEO of GreyCastle Security.
Finger Lakes Health has three locations in Geneva, Penn Yan, and Waterloo, along with several specialty medical offices.
