After nine years of collecting food for families ahead of the holidays, the Perinton Ambulance food drive is canceled for 2018.
The department made the announcement on Facebook this week saying they couldn't find a replacement sponsor after Tops closed its doors.
"I know that this time of year, especially around the holidays, is very difficult for families in need," said John LeRoy, president of the ambulance service.
The drive is typically held the weekend before Thanksgiving and collects hundreds of pounds of food every year for the Perinton Food Shelf.
The drive played a key role in keeping the shelves stocked through the holidays, according to LeRoy.
"This food drive had a fairly significant impact of those in need to have a very good holiday season whether it be Thanksgiving or Christmas or both," explained the first responder.
LeRoy said they reached out to Aldi and Wegmans to see if they'd pick up the sponsorship. Wegmans declined, and Aldi didn't respond.
"It's sad that some adjustments can't be made to allow us to continue," added LeRoy.
