ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Former Congressman Chris Collins has started serving his federal prison sentence.

He reported to a federal prison camp in Pensacola, Florida Tuesday afternoon.

Collins, the disgraced congressman for New York's 27th Congressional District, told NBC affiliate WGRZ Monday night that he has driven to Pensacola, Fla., where he is ready should he need to report.

Collins should have already been serving his 26-month prison term after pleading guilty to insider trading charges and lying to law enforcement in January, but his reporting date has been delayed several times due to the pandemic.

His lawyers have asked the judge to either postpone the start of his prison term or change his sentence to supervised release with home confinement, arguing that the 70-year-old is at risk for COVID-19.

Prosecutors have said the threat of the coronavirus is higher outside of prison.
