Former corrections officer arrested; accused of stealing medicine from inmate

BATAVIA, N.Y. (WHEC)- A former Genesee County Corrections officer has been arrested on charges of petit larceny and criminal possession of a controlled substance.

According to a press release from the Genesee County Sheriff's Office, 30-year-old Justin M. Gugel is accused of stealing a controlled substance from medication that had been "prescribed and alloted" for an inmate on January 19. At the time, he was still employed at the Genesee County Jail. An investigation was opened after pills were reported missing after a route medication count in the jail.

Gugel was issued an appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear in the City of Batavia Court on May 7.
