GATES, N.Y. (WHEC) — Gates Chili High School was evacuated Friday afternoon after a possible bomb threat.
Gates Police conducted a sweep of the school and deemed it to be safe.
As a precaution, a message on the school district's website read that the high school closed early Friday.
The message says that students who drive to school were told to drive home, and that students who rode the bus to school will be taken to Tinseltown Movie Theater for dismissal and the ride home.
Gates Police have identified a 17-year-old student who they say is responsible for writing a bomb threat on the wall of the boys' bathroom. They did not release the student's name.
Police say he'll be referred to Family Court at a later date.
The Gates Police Department urges parents of school-aged children to speak to their kids about the seriousness of making threats—from bombs to school shootings.
