ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — After a year, the Genesee Brew House's Bourbon Barrel-Aged Scotch Ale is almost ready for release.
The beer was extracted by hand and placed in Kentucky bourbon barrels to age for nine months.
Iron Heart Canning brought a mobile canning unit into the brewhouse Tuesday morning and assembled four-packs of 16-ounce cans.
Once it’s canned, the scotch ale will be sent to Genesee’s wholesalers, who will distribute the beer to local retailers. It will be available in
Rochester in very limited quantities starting this Friday.
Dean Jones is the brewmaster for this batch of beer. He says there’s a good reason why quantities will be so limited.
"Last year at this time, bourbon barrels were pretty scarce and we could only source up 10 bourbon barrels so we brought those in and a barrel being only 53 gallons, that's not a whole lot of beer,” Jones said. “We only yielded about 100 cases so this is again very very limited.”
Jones checked in monthly during the aging process, testing the beer through pinholes to make sure it was on the right track.
