ALEXANDER, N.Y. (WHEC) — A man is dead and another man and a woman are in serious condition after a police chase spanning two counties ended in a crash.
The driver, 22-year-old Cleveland Johnson of Lauderdale Lakes, Florida, was killed after crashing into a tree in Alexander, Genesee County.
The Genesee County Sheriff's Office says the chase started around 4:15 p.m. Monday in Warsaw, Wyoming County. Police tried to pull over Johnson for speeding on Route 20A, but they lost the car.
Attica Police spotted the car a short time later but stopped chasing it because of the high speeds. As officers continued north on State Route 98, they found the car had struck a tree in Alexander.
Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene.
The passengers, 33-year-old Desarae Steriotis of Philadelphia and 24-year-old Clyde Frazier of Ft. Lauderdale, were taken to area hospitals with life-threatening injuries.
Investigators say the car was a rental from Pennsylvania. They're unsure why the car fled, and the cause of the crash is still under investigation.
"A lot of unknowns in this. The occupants, the vehicle, identifications, it might take a little bit longer than a normal accident that we end up dealing with," Genesee County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Brian Frieday said.
