George Eastman Museum to face series of closures during visitor center construction

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — The George Eastman Museum will have a series of closures while construction takes place on a new visitor center, including the total closure of the museum from Jan. 6 to Jan. 30.

The new visitor center, which the museum describes as the biggest structural change to the museum since 1989, will include the ESL Federal Credit Union Pavillion, The new building will move the museum's front entrance to the west side of the building and  include a new admissions desk, gathering places, renovated meeting hall and screening room, a more "mission-focused" shop, and a relocated cafe. The museum will break ground on the project on Jan. 6, 2020.


Closings will also take place beginning in December during the restoration of the museum's colonnade.

The full list of closings is below:

  • The entire museum will be closed from Jan. 6 to Jan. 30, 2020
  • The mansion will be closed from Dec. 19, 2019 to Feb. 13, 2020
  • The Dryden Theatre will be closed Jan. 1 to June 3, 2020
  • The museum's cafe will be closed Jan. 2 to June 3, 2020
  • The museum shop will close from Jan. 2 until the end of the construction project

The museum expects that the overall construction project will be complete by July.
