ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — The George Eastman Museum has received a grant of over $340,000 from the National Endowment for the Humanities to help support preservation of fragile nitrate-based film.

The grant will go to the museum's Protecting Nitrate Film Heritage project and will help support the creation of a safe and sustainable environment for the museum's fragile collection of 35mm nitrate-based film materials housed at the Louis B. Mayer Conservation Center in Chili.

That facility holds tens of thousands of prints and negatives from films and photographs, including the original Technicolor negatives for movies like The Wizard of Oz and Gone with the Wind. The new financial assistance will help purchase a backup generator as well as other improvements to the facility's climate control system and energy efficiency.
