M&T Bank Chairman and CEO Robert G. Wilmers has died at the age of 83, the company has confirmed.
In a release on the company's website, the company reported that Wilmers had died suddenly and unexpectedly at his home.
“He was a remarkable banker, an even more remarkable citizen and a wonderful friend,” said Warren Buffett in the press release. Buffet,, Chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway,is a longtime M&T shareholder.
In a statement, Terry and Kim Pegula said, “we are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of our friend Robert Wilmers. For several decades, Mr. Wilmers displayed an unsurpassed commitment to the Western New York community and the effects of his commitment will be felt for generations. On behalf of the Bills, Sabres and Pegula Sports and Entertainment, we offer our condolences to the Wilmers family and the M&T Bank community. He will be greatly missed.”
Wilmers had headed the company since May of 1983. The Buffalo-based bank has several offices in the Rochester area.
