MENDON N.Y. (WHEC) — Girl Scouts of Western New York announced 2019's Gold Award Girl Scout.
Lauren Cody of Mendon received the honor for her project titled "HFL Volunteer Reader Club."
Cody founded the club at her high school, Honeoye Falls-Lima.
The club takes high school students into downtown Rochester once a month to practice reading with third grade students.
"I chose this project because I am passionate about reading and strongly believe in the importance of fostering a love of words at a young age," said Cody. "This club impacted my community, both by giving the third grade students an opportunity to practive, and hopefully fall in love with, reading. And by showing the hight school students how they can make a difference in their community."
In order to fund the program Cody organized a chicken barbeque, raising over $2,000.
Cody was also able to get book donations from the community so that students could bring a book home with them after the visits.
Cody will receive her Gold Award at the Gold Award Ceremony on June 1.
