June 30, 2019 08:03 PM

NEW YORK (WHEC) — Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a bill prohibiting the use of "gay or transgender panic" as a defense in criminal trials during pride celebrations in New York City.

The bill will no longer allow defendants in criminal cases to claim they were traumatized when they found out someone was gay or transgender and lashed out. This defense has been used in several high profile murder cases.

Cuomo promised to send that defense into "the dust bin of history" with the signing of this new bill.

According to CNN, New York joins California, Rhode Island, Illinois, Nevada and Connecticut in banning the practice.
