EAST ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) -- Just days before Christmas in 2017, police say a young man in East Rochester had a needle shoved in his arm filled with fentanyl and cocaine.

The concoction killed him.

Now, 15 months later, News10NBC has exclusive information on an arrest.

We learned late Monday that a 24-year-old man from East Rochester is charged in connection with the death. His name is Matthew Courtright.

Courtright is not facing homicide charges. Instead, the grand jury indicted him on criminal injection of a narcotic drug.

The victim was 31-year-old Brian Schultz.

News10NBC spoke to his mother Monday. We first met her a year ago when she was distraught over the fact that the Monroe County Medical Examiner's Office could not tell her how her son died.

Charlene Schultz says the ME's office has since concluded it was a mixture of fentanyl and cocaine.

Courtright is listed on the Monroe County Jail's census.

News10NBC learned Monday afternoon that Courtwright was arrested on Feb. 20.

The grand jury indictment was released Monday. He is being held in jail because he is also accused of violating probation.

"I feel that if someone is going to take [a needle] and put it in someone's body, the result is their responsibility," Charlene Schultz told News10NBC Monday.

We asked her to explain her feelings now that someone has been arrested and charged in connection with her son's death.

"It brings back feelings of hurt and loss," she said.

In 2018, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office says there were 1,133 overdoses and 166 people died. That's an average of 13 deaths a month.

In January and February of this year, 116 people have overdosed and 18 have died, an average of nine a month.

The indictment of Courtright is part of the police and prosecutor strategy in Monroe County to charge people if they're responsible for or connected to someone overdosing and dying.

The Monroe County District Attorney's Office does not have a date yet when Courtright will face a judge.
