Greece bowler Kara Mangiola sets eyes on the big-time

GREECE, N.Y. (WHEC)- Greece native Kara Mangiola developed a love for bowling as a small child.

"I started bowling when I was about four years old. it was more of like a family thing, so we all bowled together,” says Mangiola.  “I bowl with my family on a weekly basis and we do family competitions. I noticed when I was younger I would get really mad when my dad beat me and I took it very seriously. so then I started to bowl in tournaments."

But now that love has led her to one of bowling's biggest stages.  Mangiola will appear Tuesday at 9 p.m. on NBC Sports Network in the Bowlero Elite Series in Chicago.  The tournament features Kara and seven other amateurs bowling against eight pros....with prizes totaling a million dollars.

"It's always something that I've always wanted. I always dreamed of it. I always wished I would be somewhere at a higher level. I sent in the video and I was so excited when they emailed and called me back. I didn't believe it at first."

The segment has already been taped, and Kara obviously can't tell us how she made out, but she can say that it was a memorable experience.

"It was definitely awesome. it was intimidating at first. we were sitting in the room and you see all the pros walk in. it's like, "oh my gosh, I'm going to be bowling against all these people" and you're sitting there in the same exact atmosphere bowling next to them. it's an awesome feeling. I never thought I would be going against them now. it's a lot more fun, I think, because you're better when you go against people that are better than you."
