GREECE, NY (WHEC) - A vehicle hijacked with a young child inside at a Greece Walmart has been recovered, the four year old found safe and unharmed in the backseat.

Greece police said at 10:37 Tuesday morning, a 2012 Dodge Journey was stolen from the Walmart on Dewey Avenue. Information was immediately blasted out to law enforcement across the county as the hunt was on for the child who was in the backseat.

According to the Greece police chief, the four-year-old girl has disabilities and unable to walk or talk. He said her mother went inside the store for 10 to 15 minutes and came out to discover her car and child were missing.

He doesn’t want to place blame on the mom before knowing all the facts, investigating to determine if the car was unlocked, if the engine was running, and if the keys were inside.

“You want to take children with you when you go to the store, you certainly don’t want to leave them. Regardless of what their age is. You don’t know who is in that parking lot, who is wandering around, what kind of predators could be in the area,” explained Greece Police Chief Patrick Phelan.

He said the number one priority was in finding the child and making sure she got home safe. Around noon, police were alerted that the stolen car was parked on Merlin Street, less than six miles from the Walmart.

“We’re trying to determine who called that tip in. It may have been a witness, it may have been the suspect,” explained the police chief, saying it’s possible the suspects weren’t aware a child was in the car when they stole it.

Police were in the process of activating the Amber Alert when the car was found.

“We gathered the information as quickly as possible, suspect information, photographs, vehicle information, we notified the media almost immediately,” said Chief Phelan.

That information included pictures of the suspects taken from the surveillance cameras. It includes two females who police say could be connected to this case.

“We’re looking for two black women, they arrived at the Walmart in a maroon vehicle. The suspect who stole this car got out of the maroon vehicle and stole the blue dodge,” said the Police Chief, describing the woman who stole the car as “a heavy set black female in a black and white jacket. She appears to be about thirty years of age.”

While K9 units were on the scene at Merlin Street, he said it is possible the suspects got away in another vehicle.
He said, “this is the Greece Police Department. We will find these people, and we will find them quickly,” urging the women to turn themselves in.

The mother and daughter were reunited at the scene, with police saying the four year old is safe and unharmed.
