ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — New York state has cleared gyms to reopen starting Monday, Aug. 24.

There are several changes facilities need to make, and gyms are taking different approaches to reopening. The following requirements are in place for all gyms:

  • Masks must be worn at all times when working out. Bandanas, buffs and gaiters are not allowed.
  • The ventilation system must be upgraded with specialized filters to increase air quality. 
  • All gyms and fitness clubs must put a 33% cap on their capacity at all times. 

Here is what some gyms in the Rochester area are planning on doing:

Gold’s Gym - Fairport and Webster locations reopened Monday.

Harro East Athletic Club - Reopened Monday.

LA Fitness - All Rochester-area locations say gyms are open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends, and Kids Klubs are closed. The company's website says members should call their club for more specific information.

Planet Fitness - All locations in Albany, Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse are reopening Friday, Aug. 28. 

RAC for Women - The Greece location is closing and the Pittsford location is being sold, but a Facebook post from the organization says the new owner will honor membership time.

World Gym Rochester - Holding a "soft reopening" Monday, Aug. 24 with no group classes or childcare services. There will be check-in and check-out procedures.

YMCA - Branches will begin reopening Friday, Aug. 28. Each location has different hours. Branches will be closed Labor Day weekend and reopen Sept. 8 with expanded hours. Click here to find your branch's hours.
