ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — New York State is using a News10NBC Investigation to see if law firms are illegally collecting debt from family and friends of nursing home residents.

News10NBC first broke that story Tuesday night and reported there was a hearing on the case Wednesday.

News10NBC Chief Investigative Reporter Berkeley Brean, whose stories on nursing home debt collection are referenced in the state’s investigation, watched the virtual court hearing.

Brean says it was highly technical and did not touch on the issue or the subpoena issued by state investigators.

In a statement the law firm subpoenaed by the state, Rochester’s Pullano and Farrow told News10NBC its work to collect outstanding debt on behalf of nursing homes is legal.
