IRONDEQUOIT, N.Y. (WHEC)- There is a heavy police presence on Lake Shore Boulevard in Irondequoit for a death that is now being described as "suspicious", according to the Irondequoit Police Department and a News10NBC crew at the scene.

According to IPD, the presence began as a welfare check around 8:15 p.m. on Friday. Upon arrival, officers found a 86-year-old woman unresponsive. St. Paul Fire Department and Monroe Ambulance responded to the scene for assistance, and it was learned the woman had succumbed to "injuries sustained".

The death was originally reported as simply being "unattended", but a press release from IPD now says it is being regarded as suspicious. Our News10NBC crew on the scene had reported seeing units of the New York State Police, including one with a drone.

News10NBC's team saw investigators going in and out of the house, some carrying boxes of what is believed to be evidence.

According to neighbors, the woman has lived alone ever since her husband died a few years ago.

Some neighbors were shocked to see such a scene in their neighborhood.

"I am bewildered by it all," said one named Eleanor, "I don't know what to make of this because it's so unusual, it's never ever happened that I know of."

The Irondequoit Police Department says that the investigation is ongoing but that they believe it is an isolated incident and there is no public safety concern. They will provide further updates when available.

In addition to the agencies mentioned before, the Monroe County Sheriff's Department and Monroe County Medical Examiners Office also assisted at the scene.
