Greece Police found the body of a 5-year-old girl in the Erie Canal Thursday just a couple hours after she had been reported missing.
Officers responded to Henpeck Park along the north shore of the Erie Canal around 7 p.m. for the reports of a missing girl that was believed to have fallen in the water.
The girl's body was found in the water about two hours later.
Greece Police were assisted by multiple agencies including scuba teams and fire departments.
"There is no sense to be made in the death of a 5-year-old little girl," Greece Police Chief Patrick Phelan said. "It's a very difficult job for all of these brave men and women to do and they're out there doing it. I feel so badly for the families. These are horrible tragedies. I don't know what you say to make sense of a child drowning at the age of five."
The child's name has not yet been released.
The incident remains under investigation.
