The famed Hill Cumorah Pageant will cease production following its 2020 season, officials for the pageant announced.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced Saturday that several pageants produced by the church, including the flagship pageant in Palmyra will be ending.

According to the Church’s official release, “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is growing across the earth. As this occurs, local Church leaders and members are encouraged to focus on gospel learning in their homes and to participate in Sabbath worship and the Church’s supporting programs for children, youth, individuals and families. The goal of every activity in the Church should be to increase faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and to share His gospel message throughout the world. Local celebrations of culture and history may be appropriate. Larger productions, such as pageants, are discouraged. As it relates to existing pageants, conversations with local Church and community leaders are underway to appropriately end, modify or continue these productions.”

The pageant is annually staged in Manchester, New York and just wrapped up its 81st season in July with approximately 25,000 people attending the event.

The Mayor of Palmyra, David Husk, said in response to the news about the pageant, "with all the historic Mormon sites in and around the area I am hoping the many visitors will continue to visit our village . With the pageant being held for a short period in July, we as Palmyra residents welcome them throughout the year. We have had and always will work with the church, it’s members and the many vacationers that make Palmyra their destination."

The pageant has grown to be one of the largest outdoor theatrical event in North America and is visited annually by visitors from around the world.

The 2019 performance of the Hill Cumorah Pageant will have performances July 12 and 13 and continue with additional shows July 16 through the 20th.
