The Hilton High School senior who survived the deadly crash in Greece is still at Strong Memorial Hospital Tuesday morning.
Brianna Scarpulla, 18, is listed in satisfactory condition.
Her friend and classmate Paige Smith died in the crash Sunday night.
Police say Scarpulla lost control of the car, over corrected, crossed the center line and crashed into a SUV on Latta Road. Investigators believe speed and distracted driving led to the crash.
A GoFundMe account has been set up to help with Scarpulla's medical expenses.
A separate GoFundMe account has also been set up in memory of Smith. Funeral arrangements for Smith have not been announced yet.
Statements from members of The Hilton School District spoke about the Brianna, ”Brianna was a varsity cheerleader as well, and she and Paige were best friends,” said Hilton High School Principal Brian Bartalo. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Brianna for a swift and full recovery, so that she can realize her dream of attending the University of Tampa in the fall.”
The District’s Crisis Team is available to provide support to students, families and staff in the days to come.
“We are all deeply saddened by this tragic event, and our thoughts are with the families and those close to these young women,” said Superintendent Dr. Casey Kosiorek. “Our staff will do everything we can to help our students and Hilton learning community during this extremely difficult time.”
