ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — A Honeyoe Falls man was detained at the Greater Rochester Interational Airport after he tried to bring a loaded handgun onto an airplane.

TSA officers spotted the gun in the checkpoint X-ray machine on Tuesday and contacted the Monroe County Sheriff's Office. Deputies confiscated the gun and detained the man for questioning.

The man, whose name was not released, was carrying a legally registerered .45 caliber automatic handgun loaded with five bullets in a briefcase.

Deputies say the passenger typically carries the gun in the brief case and forgot to remove it before going to the airport. The man was allowed to take the gun back home and then flew out later that day without further incident.

No criminal charges were filed but deputies say the TSA will be following up with him.

TSA says this is the first gun caught at the airport's checkpoint this year. For details on how to properly travel with a firearm, click here.
