ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — We've been telling you that some people have been skipping their second dose completely, however, new data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows those numbers are low.

The CDC claims 8% of Americans haven't returned for their second dose, that's roughly five million people. Federal health experts believe that number to be much lower.

It's because people who got vaccinated at one location and received the second dose at another may not have been linked in the database.

As for why some people are skipping out on the second dose, health experts told CNN people are busy and are unable to make it to their appointment, some may not know about the second dose, or others may have forgotten.

As of this posting, 34.9% of New Yorkers have completed the vaccine series.
