Inside the Evidence: Milgate family wants answers

GREECE, N.Y. (WHEC) -- Who killed Tim Milgate? It's a cold case that has haunted the Town of Greece for 24 years.

Last week, News10NBC took you Inside the Evidence showing you exclusive pictures never released before from the crime scene. Now, Tim's father is talking with News10NBC.

"I can't believe to this day we don't know who killed my son," said Bob Milgate.

His son was just 34 years old when he was killed. He was found dead in his mother's North Greece Road home on June 27, 1995. He had moved there along with his wife and two children.

Bob Milgate remembers that night.

"I got a phone call from my daughter. 'Dad. Daddy, Tim's dead'," he recalled.

Bob had to go inside the house and identify the body. Police say his son had been stabbed more than 27 times and was shot in the chest and head.

"You see your son laying there, and you know he's a fighter. How could it happen? From that moment on, I can't express the sorrow," Bob said.

"There were multiple theories on what had gone on and many of those theories we continue to try to prove today," said Greece Police Lt. Chris Bittner.

Investigators say they continue to try and talk with Tim's wife, Trudi Milgate. The night Tim was killed police say Trudi, along with Tim's mom and their two kids, had gone to a movie. When they came home, police say they found Tim dead.

"It's unsolved," said Greece Police Sgt. Ben Waye. "It's an unsolved murder and so like you said in Greece it's kind of uncommon."

Investigators say Trudi initially gave a statement to them but weeks after Tim's death, they say she hired an attorney and moved to Minnesota along with their two daughters. Greece Police say despite multiple attempts to talk to Trudi, she hasn't spoken to them since. Bob also hasn't heard from Trudi or his granddaughters in more than 20 years.

"The hard part is I don't see my grandchildren," said Bob. "The absence of those two girls in my life is unexplainable to me."

Greece Police also want to speak to a male acquaintance of Trudi's at the time. News10NBC is not naming him, but investigators say he has also retained an attorney.

Bob told News10NBC his theory about his son's death.

"Tim liked his marijuana. There was no doubt about that," said Bob. "I think my son Timmy might have been involved in distribution of drugs."

So News10NBC asked Greece Police.

"Could have Tim been involved in drugs?" asked News10NBC's Nikki Rudd.

"Our investigation doesn't point to anything where he was involved enough where someone would want to kill him over it," said Sgt. Waye.

All these years later, Bob is left with that one big question.

"Why would a lovely kid who would do a favor for anybody be taken so rudely?" asked Bob.

Greece Police believe there are people out there who have information on the death of Tim Milgate.
