SODUS, N.Y. (WHEC) — It's a double homicide that shocked our community almost one year ago.
A young couple was gunned down in Sodus on Oct. 22, 2018. It will be featured Friday night on Dateline here on News10NBC, but we are also going inside the evidence of this case.
News10NBC's Nikki Rudd has spent hours going through evidence and talking with law enforcement and prosecutors. There are some things you may not know about this case and evidence you've never seen before.
"Me and Josh did not have a good relationship," Charlene Childers told investigators as she was being questioned last year. News10NBC obtained the video from that interview.
"She's just a master manipulator," said Wayne County Assistant District Attorney Christine Callanan. She prosecuted the case.
She says Charlene Childers planned the whole thing.
"Charlene is used to getting what she wants," said Wayne County Sheriff's Lt. Robert Milby. "Charlene is used to people believing everything she says."
Childer's husband, Tim Dean, a former police chief in Sunray, Texas, was the triggerman.
"Tim Dean ultimately is a coward," said Callanan. "He shows up and kills for his wife but will run and flee."
Childers had recently lost custody of her two children to her ex, Josh Niles, one of the victims. The other victim was Josh's fiancee, Amber Washburn.
"That is the motive," Lt. Milby said. "Charlene wanted her kids back."
"Basically a homicide starting in Texas and being completed in New York is insane," said Callanan.
In the weeks ahead, News10NBC will take you inside the evidence of this case. From the crash in Kansas to the friend who flipped on them, you'll see it all. We'll also share new details you haven't heard before.
Friday night, be sure to watch the Dateline episode, "The Plan." It starts at 9 p.m. only on News10NBC.
