Web Extra: Clues in Wanda Walkowicz murder

February 08, 2019 02:22 PM

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) -- Wanda Walkowicz is the second victim in what's been called the Double Initial murders. Three young Rochester girls were abducted, raped and strangled in the early 1970s.

Here's something you may not have heard about Wanda's case. The Saturday night before she disappeared police say Wanda and her friend had been chased by a stranger. It happened as the girls were walking near the railroad tracks that run parallel to Conkey Avenue. They reported the man hid in the bushes, and they ran home.

Could it have been the same man who raped and killed her just days later?

Investigators also told us when Wanda picked up groceries before she was abducted she bought some cigarettes for her mom. Those groceries and cigarettes were never found.

"The brand of cigarettes is Pall Mall," said New York State Police Investigator George Grbic. "If the killer did get rid of the other grocery items, I would think maybe those cigarettes, there's a chance they might have used at least the cigarettes. That's another thing somebody might remember. Somebody smoking an off-brand cigarette."
