SODUS, N.Y. (WHEC) — Neighborhood kids are rallying behind a Wayne County woman involved in a deadly ATV accident.
On a small side street in Sodus, you’ll find a group of neighborhood kids selling lemonade and taking can donations. Across the street, the bed of a pickup truck is full of those empty cans and bottles, awaiting a return for nickels and dimes.
But these kids aren’t cashing in, they’re saving up the money to donate to Bailey Rae Dougherty, a woman from Sodus Point who is currently in the hospital.
On July 5, Bailey Dougherty and her mom, Tammy Shears, were involved in an ATV crash in Lewis County. Tammy did not survive and Bailey was hospitalized with severe leg injuries.
While she is recovering in the hospital, the neighborhood is rallying behind her.
“We know her well. Our parents know her, so we thought this would be a nice idea for her, to make her happy,” explained Lia Buchwald as she served lemonade to neighbors.
Most are leaving hefty donations, others are dropping off more cans. So far, the group has raised nearly $2,000.
They don’t plan on slowing down, keeping the lemonade stand open on Union Street throughout the week and selling baked goods at the farmer’s market.
In addition, Bailey’s workplace started an online fundraiser and a Facebook page called Believing in Bailey Rae Dougherty has been created to highlight other fundraisers being held by community members.
One event includes Bailey’s Brews & Booze BBQ, which will be held at the Wolcott Hotel on August 3.
