ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — The organization responsible for managing Lake Ontario’s water levels is now projecting water levels will not reach the record highs of 2017 and 2019.

The International Joint Commission (IJC) released a report Tuesday saying while the water levels are still well above average, improving conditions and actions taken by the IJC to reduce water levels will mean they will likely peak well below where they did in 2017 and 2019.

The report came with a disclaimer that the prediction isn’t a guarantee, “The Board can’t predict what the weather will bring and encourage shoreline communities to not let their guards down.”

Some lakeshore communities, like Sodus Point, have already begun to put down sandbags in preparation for the possibility of more floods.
