ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester Police say an argument with neighbors led to a man going into an apartment building around North Clinton Avenue and Clifford Avenue with a gun on Sunday evening.

The 27-year-old man came out after an hours-long police standoff. The man was the only person inside the building since the families living there left before the standoff began.

RPD officers responded around 5:15 p.m. after getting reports of the man inside the apartment. Officers say they spent hours trying to talk to the suspect before calling in the SWAT Team and Hostage Negotiation Team.

The special unit members were able to convince the man to leave the building. No one was hurt during the standoff.

“Officers did make numerous attempts to try to establish communication with the individual. However, they failed at these attempts,” said RPD Capt. Adam Radens. “Numerous hours later, within that time frame, we made the decision to activate our special teams, our SWAT and our HNT teams.”

RPD says they found a gun when they searched the building. Officers say they also found six large dogs in a room and safely secured the dogs.

Officers say charges against the man haven’t been determined yet. The families living in the apartment building were able to return.
