ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) – A local couple has lost nearly 250 pounds together.
For the majority of her life, Yadira Morales battled with her weight.
"She tried for many years to do the right things; from good nutrition, exercise, medications….without making long term success," explained Dr. Alok Gandhi, a bariatric surgeon with Rochester Regional Health. He added, "She realized having these medical issues would lead to other diseases down the road."
She approached Dr. Gandhi a few years ago, undergoing gastric bypass surgery two years and four months ago.
"My weight was 250 and now, it's 134 pounds," shared Morales.
When her husband, Angel Madera, saw her progress, he decided to follow her example.
He's down to 156 pounds from 285 pounds in one year.
"I put in my mind 'I need to do my part, he needs to do his part.' Now I'm going to the gym, excited!" shared Morales.
Her lifestyle has changed, but so has her health. She's no longer on medication, just a multi-vitamin.
"Every other day there's a new ad or billboard promising things, all these gimmicks. The reality is it's a tough disease," expressed Dr. Gandhi.
He knows surgery isn't for everyone.
"I tell any patient, or potential patient, to do your research, exhaust options. If it can be done without surgery, it should be done without surgery."
